Becky: Welcome to 3-Minute Egyptian Arabic Season 1, Lesson 17 - Why? In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask the question ‘why’ in Egyptian Arabic.

Becky: Here's the informal way to ask 'Why are you late?' in Egyptian Arabic.
Nora: [Normal] أتأخرت ليه؟(ʾitʾaḫḫart līh?)
Becky: First is a word meaning 'you were late'
Nora: [Normal] إتأخرت [Slow] إتأخرت (ʾitʾaḫḫart)
Becky: Last is the word meaning 'why'
Nora: [Normal] ليه [Slow] ليه(līh)
Becky: Listen again to the informal question meaning 'Why are you late?'
Nora: [Slow] أتأخرت ليه؟ [Normal] أتأخرت ليه؟
Becky: Now, imagine you're speaking to your boss. Here's the way to say, 'I Did not catch the train.'
Nora: [Normal] مالحقتش القطر.(mel-ḥi'tiš el-'aṭr.)
Becky: First is a word meaning 'I Did not make it in time for'
Nora: [Normal] مالحقتش [Slow] مالحقتش (mel-ḥi'tiš)
Becky: Last is the word meaning 'the train'

Cultural Insight
Becky: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight.
Nora: You can say the word leeh alone if the sentence in question is implied in the conversation, like you would say "why" on its own sometimes. The answer to leeh usually starts with ashaan, which is the Egyptian Arabic word for "because".
