Ahlan bikom, ana Carole! Welcome to Arabicpod101.comโ€™s Abjadiyyah Made Easy!
The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn the Arabic alphabet โ€“ the Abjadiyyah!
In the previous lesson, we introduced 3 letters that look alike, except for some minor differences. Some were totally different. Two of them were the first 2 letters of the 8 sounds that donโ€™t have English counterparts. Do you remember how to write them? Make sure that you feel confident about the characters from past lessons before you move on!
In this lesson, we'll continue by learning 2 more letters that look alike. After that, we'll learn a few more words to add to your notebook. Ready? Letโ€™s go!
Our first letter is โ€œุฏโ€!
Itโ€™s just like the English D. Very easy to pronounce, and easy to write as well!
Hereโ€™s the isolated form:
ุฏ
It is a single stroke. You start from the top, and then form a right angle. And thatโ€™s it! Done!
Now weโ€™ll write it.
ุจุฏ (Medial or Final)
Just like the Alef we learned, the Initial form of this letter is just like its isolated form, and the medial form is like the final form.
The second letter we'll learn in this lesson looks like the previous letter, ุฏ. Itโ€™s the โ€œุฐโ€.
Note how it does not dip beneath the line. Weโ€™ll learn 2 letters in the next lesson that dip beneath the line. Thatโ€™s why you should make sure you differentiate between them. This letter is like the โ€œT-Hโ€ sound in the word โ€œThisโ€. Do you remember that we learned another letter corresponding to the English T-H sound? It was ุซ and itโ€™s pronounced as a silent [th] (/ฮธ/) as in THief. This letterโ€™s pronunciation is a voiced sound [th] (/รฐ/), as in THis and THat. /รฐ/, /รฐ/. Itโ€™s pronounced with the tongue between the upper and lower teeth. It is quite easy to pronounce.
Hereโ€™s how to write the isolated version.
ุฐ
Now let's see how it looks like in its other forms.
As you can see, itโ€™s just like its look-alike, ุฏ. The initial form is the same as the isolated, and the medial form is the same as the final. If you know how to write ุฏ then you just need to add a dot to write ุฐ.
Handwriting time.
ุฐ (Initial, isolated)
ุฎุฐ (medial, final)
We'll continue learning more letters next time, but for now, let's practice using these letters in some new words.
First up is the word โ€œุฌุฏโ€. It means โ€œgrandfatherโ€. Thatโ€™s the Jim we learned in the previous lesson, in initial form, connected to the Dal we learned in this lesson, in its final form. Ok, now try writing it.
Let's start with the Jim, then connect it to the Dal.
ุฌุฏ
Great job!
Letโ€™s try another word. โ€œุฅุฐุงโ€ means โ€œifโ€. We learned the alef in the first lesson, and the thal in this lesson. Here you can see that little mark from lesson 1 is now at the bottom of alef and has changed the sound to an I. Don't worry too much about it for now! Now let's try writing it by hand.
โ€œุฅุฐุงโ€ (Initial)
Now it's time for Carole's Tips.
Handwriting is kind of like a signature in every language, and no two people's handwriting is the same. Itโ€™s better to learn the basics and the standard form of the alphabet, and get used to it first, then develop your own style.
Good luck!
Thatโ€™s it for this lesson. In the next lesson, we'll meet our next 2 letters, which look a lot like the letters from this lesson!
Salam!

What words can you write using Dal or Dhal?

Hi Matthew,

Thank you for your question!

We need to take into account which ways both dhal and alif connect. dhal has no medial form, aka it does not connect to the letter after it. That's why it doesn't connect to the alif after it.

In the word if/ุฅุฐุง, why isn't the ุฐ connected to the ุง if alif has a connecting form that fits?

Marhaban! The video does not play. It only shows a play button with a line through it. The same for the next few videos as well.

Shukran!

Thank you for another great video. I appreciate you describing the difference in pronunciation between ุฐ and ุซ; it makes a lot more sense to me know. Also, I feel I am learning a lot of words by watching the videos and reviewing the lesson notes. โค๏ธ๏ธ

Hi Maria,

Are you sure you are talking about grandfather? It doesn't have an alef. Could you clarify please?

Hi!

This is probably a stupid question, but why at the end of the word Alef is disconnected from Thaal in the word granddad, if Alif has a finishing letter?

Thanks!

Hi Giles,

Good question!

If you check the vowelling signs lesson, you will find out the Arabic has 2 kinds of vowels: short and long.

Transcribed, ุชุงุฌ sounds like "taaj". This is a long vowel.

On the other hand, ุฌูŽุฏ sounds like "jad" with 1 a. This one is a short vowel.

Hope this helps.

Why do some words use Alef and some don't?

For e.g. TAJ, uses the Alef

But JAD (grandfather) just uses Jim and Dal

There's no video and I don't have the money to pay or the time for a job I'm still in school. Couldn't there have just been something to listen to? Or a picture or something??

Hi Stefan,

The dhal is disconnected from the letter after it. So it basically has no medial form.

How can you differentiate medial Dhal from medial Nun in normal handwriting? They both end up looking almost exactly the same.
