Lesson Transcript

Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn conversational phrases to ask and answer the question, "How do you say this?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to ask someone how a word is pronounced.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
بنقول دي ازاي؟
(benʾūl dī ezzāy?)
بنقولها كدة: "جراج".
(benʾūlhā kedah: "garāǧ".)
Once more with the English translation.
بنقول دي ازاي؟
(benʾūl dī ezzāy?)
“How do you say this?”
بنقولها كدة: "جراج".
(benʾūlhā kedah: "garāǧ".)
"It's 'parking lot.'”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say “How do you say this?”
That's:
بنقول دي ازاي؟
(benʾūl dī ezzāy?)
Listen to it again:
بنقول دي ازاي؟, بنقول دي ازاي؟
(benʾūl dī ezzāy?, benʾūl dī ezzāy?)
This Arabic sentence means something like " You say this how? ” But it means “How do you say this?”
Now, how do you answer this question?
The pattern is:
بنقولها كدة: [ ].
(benʾūlhā kedah: [ ].)
This Arabic sentence literally translates into " We say it like this: [word]. ” But it means “It's (word).”
For example:
"It's 'parking lot.'”
بنقولها كدة: "جراج"., بنقولها كدة: "جراج".
(benʾūlhā kedah: "garāǧ"., benʾūlhā kedah: "garāǧ".)
