Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn conversational phrases to comment on a joke. After watching this video, you’ll be able to compliment or criticize anyone on their sense of humor.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
ليه كتاب الحساب شكله حيران؟ عشان فيه أسئلة كتير.
(līh ketāb el-ḥesāb šakloh ḥayrān? ʿašān fīh ʾasʾelah ketīr.)
ههه، إنت ظريف أوي!
(hahaha, ʾenta ẓarīf ʾawī!)
Once more with the English translation.
ليه كتاب الحساب شكله حيران؟ عشان فيه أسئلة كتير.
(līh ketāb el-ḥesāb šakloh ḥayrān? ʿašān fīh ʾasʾelah ketīr.)
“Why is the math book sad? Because it has so many problems.”
ههه، إنت ظريف أوي!
(hahaha, ʾenta ẓarīf ʾawī!)
“Haha, you're so funny!”
First of all, let’s listen to the joke again “Why is the math book sad? Because it has so many problems.”
That's:
ليه كتاب الحساب شكله حيران؟ عشان فيه أسئلة كتير.
(līh ketāb el-ḥesāb šakloh ḥayrān? ʿašān fīh ʾasʾelah ketīr.)
Listen to it again:
ليه كتاب الحساب شكله حيران؟ عشان فيه أسئلة كتير., ليه كتاب الحساب شكله حيران؟ عشان فيه أسئلة كتير.
(līh ketāb el-ḥesāb šakloh ḥayrān? ʿašān fīh ʾasʾelah ketīr., līh ketāb el-ḥesāb šakloh ḥayrān? ʿašān fīh ʾasʾelah ketīr.)
Now, how do you react to a joke? First, you’ll need to learn how to say “haha” . That’s ههه, ههه (hahaha, hahaha)
Then, you’ll need to learn how to say “You're so [adjective].” The pattern is:
إنت [adjective] أوي./إنتي [adjective] أوي.
(ʾenta [adjective] ʾawī. / ʾentī [adjective] ʾawī.)
“You're so [adjective].”
This Arabic sentence literally translates as “You [adjective] very.”
But it means “You're so [adjective].”.
For example:
“Haha, you're so funny!”
ههه، إنت ظريف أوي!, ههه، إنت ظريف أوي!
(hahaha, ʾenta ẓarīf ʾawī!, hahaha, ʾenta ẓarīf ʾawī!)
