Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class — Holidays in Egypt Series at ArabicPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Egyptian holidays and observances. I’m Michael, and you're listening to Lesson 24, Summer Holidays. In Egyptian Arabic, it’s called [ أجازة الصيف (ʾaǧāzet el-ṣeif)].
Summer vacations in Egypt mean family, friends, fun, playing, staying up until late at night, and many other things which we are going to talk about in this episode.
Now, before we go into more detail, do you know the answer to this question—
Do you know what Egyptian people love to eat most on the beach?
If you don't already know, you’ll find out a bit later. Keep listening.
Summer vacation may be the time Egyptian families wait for all year. This is because this vacation is what makes it easy for them to bear the exhaustion during the year, whether this exhaustion is a result of work, study, or other pressures of life, or [ ضغوط الحياه (ḍuġūṭ el-ḥayāh)]. Summer vacation usually starts from early June until September. August, however, is the most crowded month because it is the hottest one.
The best thing about summer vacation is the gathering of family and friends. During the summer vacation, all people will stay up late until dawn, or [ الفجر (el-fagr)].
The streets lights will be on and the shops, especially food shops, will be open all night long until the morning. In summer resorts, the streets are empty during the day because people go to sleep late, around dawn. One of the activities seen most at summer resorts is biking and, recently, riding beach buggies. Both adults and children enjoy playing football at summer resorts, as well as practicing water sports, such as water skiing.
The beach, or [ الشط (el-shatt)] is the most important thing in a summer resort. Egyptians can't spend a day without going to the beach. After they get up, they usually get ready to go to the beach. Children wear their swimsuits, or [ المايوه (el-mayoh)], and prepare their beach toys. Young people take balls and rackets to play with on the beach.
People eat a lot during summer vacation. This is because of the high level of iodine, or [ يود (yūd)], in the air in places overlooking the sea.
And now I'll give you the answer to the earlier quiz.
Do you know what Egyptian people love to eat most on the beach?
“Fresca” is the thing people love to eat most on the beach. It is a dessert made of biscuits and honey.
So listeners, how was this lesson? What do you like to do during summer time? Let us know in the comments and we’ll see you next time! Bye! مع السلامة (maʿ el-salāmah)!
