| Nora: السلام عليكم. I'm Nora. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to express that something is necessary using the word لازم |
| Becky: This conversation takes place between two coworkers after their boss sent out a new memo about the company's vacation policy. |
| Nora: It's between Saleem and Fadia. |
| Becky: The speakers are coworkers, so they will be using informal Egyptian Arabic. Okay, let's listen to the conversation. |

| Saleem: We are required to have all vacation plans approved two months in advance! We also have to sign a pledge to check work emails on vacation. |
| Fadia: Wow, that seems strict. Do you think this new policy is a result of Naseem taking vacation during the busiest time of year? |
| Saleem: Probably. I am a committed worker but when I take vacation, I need a break from work. |
| Fadia: Seems like there is no escape now, even on vacation. |

| Becky: Nora, what’s a common way to express surprise in Arabic? |
| Nora: Yalahwy is an exclamation expression in Arabic that means "how and when did this happen?" If you use it, you will sound very natural! |
| Becky: Is it kind of like saying "Oh my God" in English? |
| Nora: It is! Other phrases to express surprise are yaakhabar abyadd, which literally means “white news”, or yaakhbar aswad which literally means “black news”, both for bad news. |
| Becky: Can you use these anywhere in the Arabic-speaking world? |
| Nora: Good question. Keep in mind that if you are traveling to different parts of the Arab world, the phrases commonly used to show surprise may change or have a different application. |
| Becky: Arabic culture is very expressive and there are many, many phrases and gestures to learn that are unique to different locations and dialects. Do you have any good tips for us here? |
| Nora: Personally, I think Arabic movies are a great way to learn some of these phrases and gestures, but be sure to keep in mind where the movie is set! |

| Becky: meaning "concerning” or “in connection with " |
| Nora: The letter ب at the beginning means "with" and the rest of the word comes from the root خصص, which means “assign” or “specify.” |
| Becky: So together, this phrase literally means “with specification.” Right? |
| Nora: Right! You can use this phrase any time you would use the connecting phrase "in regards to" or "concerning" in English. |
| Becky: Can you give us an example using this word? |
| Nora: Sure. For example, you can say.. هتعمل إيه بخصوص المشروع؟ - لسه مش عارف |
| Becky: ..which means "What are you going to do concerning the project? - I still don't know." |

| Becky: Which means "also." |
| Nora: This word can be used at the beginning of a sentence as a connecting word, and it has many other uses. |
| Becky: When do we use it? |
| Nora: Usually, this would go at the beginning of a sentence or phrase, but it is also very commonly heard in the phrase “you too” أنت كمان or "me too" انا كمان in Egyptian Arabic. It doesn't exist in Modern Standard Arabic. |
| Becky: Can you give us an example using this word? |
| Nora: Sure. For example, you can say.. أنا جعان - وأنا كمان |
| Becky: .. which means "I'm hungry. - Me too." |
| Becky: Okay, what's the next word? |
| Nora: تفتكر |
| Becky: meaning "Do you think.." |
| Nora: This word has the root فكر, which means “to think.” |
| Becky: When do you use it? |
| Nora: You use this phrase at the beginning of a sentence, any time you want to know someone else's opinion about something. |
| Becky: You use it to discuss information you don't know. Nora, can you give us an example using this word? |
| Nora: Sure. For example, you can say.. تفتكر هننجح؟ - إن شاء الله |
| Becky: .. which means "Do you think we'll pass? - If God wills. (hopefully)" |
| Becky: Okay, now onto the grammar. |

| Nora: In particular, you will learn how to express that something is necessary using the word لازم |
| Becky: What does this word mean? |
| Nora: The word لازم is an essential and useful Arabic word. This word comes from the longer formal Arabic phrase من اللازم أن which means "it is necessary that..." In conversation, it has been shortened to لازم. It's a very simple word to use, since you don't have to worry about conjugating it. You just conjugate the verb that comes after it. |
| Becky: In the dialogue, Saleem uses it at the beginning of his sentences when explaining the new policies. |
| Nora: Yes, he says لازم ناخد موافقة |
| Becky: “it is necessary we get approval” |
| Nora: and كمان لازم نمضي على تعهد بإننا |
| Becky: “also it is necessary that we sign a pledge”. Can you tell us something more about its usage? |
| Nora: Using the phrase is very simple. Just use لازم at the beginning, then conjugate the rest of the sentence using regular conjugation rules. |
| Becky: What about if it’s past tense? |
| Nora: Just put كان before لازم. |
| Becky: Can you give us an example? |
| Nora: For example, to say "it was necessary" just say كان لازم |
| Becky: Ok. What’s a sample sentence? |
| Nora: لازم اروح الشغل |
| Becky: Which means “I have to go to work." |
| Nora: لازم نذاكِر للامتحان. |
| Becky: "We need to study for the test." |
| Nora: كان لازم يتكلم مع مراته. |
| Becky: "He had to speak to his wife." |
