Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use the conjunction “wa” to join verbs in Egyptian Arabic. This conversation takes place in the classroom. |
Nora: It's between the Teacher, Mariam, and Mohammed. |
Becky: The speakers are in school, so they’ll be using informal Egyptian Arabic. Okay, let's listen to the conversation. |

مريم : استاذ , مين المسؤول عن السياسة البيئية فى مصر ؟ |
المدرس : كل الناس ممكن يشاركوا فى الحفاظ على البيئة . كل الناس المفروض انهم يجمعوا المخلفات ,و يعيدوا التدوير و يحافظوا على الميَة. |
مريم : انا عارفة . بس انا بتكلم على المستوى الأعلى مين اللى بيحط القواعد و القوانين ؟ |
المدرس: فى مصر فى وزارة الدولة لشئون البيئة . |
محمد : بيعملوا ايه لخدمة البيئة ؟ |

Teacher: Everyone can do their part to protect the environment. It is necessary for everyone to pick up trash, recycle, and save water. |
Mariam: I know, but I mean in the big picture, who creates the rules and laws? |
Teacher: In Egypt, there is the Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs. |
Muhammed: What do they do to help the environment? |
Teacher: The ministry was created by the government and they do many things. They have raised awareness. They have written the rules. Also, they have worked with other countries to create environmental policies all over the world. |
Muhammed: Oh! I heard on the news that Egypt will participate in a global conference on environmental issues in Rio de Janeiro. |
Mariam: Can we host a global conference on environmental issues here in Cairo? |
Teacher: Maybe, if the ministry has a lot of support from the people. Start spreading the word! |

Nora: Outlets like Facebook and Twitter are definitely very popular in the Arab world. |
Becky: From some recent events it seems like young people in particular have used the Internet in powerful ways to advocate for causes they believe in. |
Nora: Right. For example, environmental education is lacking in many areas, but through social media, people have an easy way to spread information and raise awareness about pollution and resource conservation. |
Becky: What is a practical example of this? |
Nora: For example, sometimes campaigns to stop littering and efforts to clean up neighborhoods are organized through social media sites. |
Becky: What’s a useful expression here? |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Becky: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is.. |
Nora: المسئول |
Becky: meaning "responsible (for)". This word literally means "the official of" but it is used to mean "the person responsible for" something. |
Nora: This word is always followed by عن and the thing that the person is in charge of. |
Becky: You can use this phrase to describe when someone is responsible for a certain task or department. It is a very useful phrase in the professional world. |
Nora: An interesting thing about this word is that it can be written in two ways, مسؤول and مسئول. It's pronounced the same, but the middle letter can be either a ؤ or a ئ and it means the same thing either way. |
Becky: Can you give us an example using this word? |
Nora: The question phrase "who is responsible for ...?" is probably a very common use. For example, you can say.. مين مسئول عن اللوجستكس؟ |
Becky: ..which means "Who's in charge of the logistics?" Okay, what's the next phrase? |
Nora: السياسة البيئية |
Becky: meaning "environmental policy" or literally "the policy of the environment" |
Nora: This phrase uses the idafa construction. |
Becky: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Nora: Sure. For example, you can say.. السياسة البيئية في مصر فيها مشاكل كبيرة. |
Becky: .. which means "There are many issues in Egypt's environmental policy." |
Nora: The construction of this phrase is very useful for describing all types of government policy. Just use the first word السياسة then add the type of policy you are referring to. Don't forget to start both words with ال! |
Becky: Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |

Becky: In this lesson, you'll learn how to combine together several verbs for the same subject. |
Nora: First, we’ll see how to add more than one verb for one subject, and then how to use two verbs in a row to describe a complex action. |
Becky: Ok, let’s start with the first case of using more than one verb for one subject. |
Nora: We can describe more than one action referring to one subject by using wa و |
Becky: It’s not too difficult - you just need to keep the same conjugation in terms of tense, gender, and number for all the verbs you use for that subject. For example, in the dialogue, the teacher explains all the kinds of things we should do to protect the environment by using three different verbs... |
Nora: In the dialogue, the teacher says يِجمَعوا المُخَلَّفات ,و يعيدوا التَدوير و يحافظوا عَلى المَيَّة. |
Becky: meaning “The ministry was created by the government and they do many things.” |
Nora: Note how all three verbs are conjugated in the plural third person form because the subject is “everyone” كل الناس |
Becky: Also, he explains what the Ministry of State Environmental affairs did to protect the environment by saying... |
Nora: رَفَعت مُستَوَى الوَعي عَند الناس ,و كَتَبت القَوْانين و اِشتَغَلت مَع دِوَل تانيَة |
Becky: meaning “They have raised awareness. They have written the rules. Also, they have worked with other countries to create environmental policies all over the world.” |
Nora: Here, all three verbs are conjugated in the feminine singular third person form, because the subject is the feminine noun “ministry” وزارة. |
Becky: Let’s try with a more simple situation and some everyday verbs. |
Nora: For example, you can say أنا باكُل و بَشرَب و بَنام في الشُغل. |
Becky: meaning “I eat, drink, and sleep at work!” All three verbs are conjugated in the first person present tense form. Adding verbs in this pattern doesn’t imply any specific order in which these verbs take place. |
Nora: Also, unlike the conjunction “and” in English, there is no limit to how many times you can use و in a row in a sentence, so go ahead and use it as many times as you like! |
Becky: Ok, now let’s see the second case of combining two verbs in a row to describe a complex action. |
Nora: In this case we’ll use two verbs in a row without و in between. This can change the meaning of the verbs by creating a verb phrase. |
Becky: In the dialogue, the teacher told Mariam to “start spreading the word”. |
Nora: Yes, he said إبدَئي إنشُري الكَلام دَه |
Becky: which means “Start spreading the word!” |
Nora: Note how we used 2 verbs, “start” and “spread”, in a row. |
Becky: In Arabic, both words will be conjugated exactly the same way. |
Nora: This combination of a verb followed by another verb can be used in many ways, but the most common combinations involve the first verb being “start” بدأ or “go” راح or “come” تعالى\جه |
Becky: Can you give us some examples? |
Nora: روح قول لِماما تيجي بسُرعَة. |
Becky: which means “Go tell mom to come quickly!” |
Nora: تَعالى خُد حاجتَك. |
Becky: “Come take your things.” |
Nora: رُحت أَشوف المَحَل الجديد النَهاردَة. |
Becky: “I went to see the new shop today.” |
