Alisha: Expressions with Negative Connotations, Part 1
Alisha: Hi everyone, and welcome back to ArabicPod101.com. I'm Alisha.
Sherif: And I'm Sherif!
Alisha: This is Must-Know Egyptian Arabic Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 9. In this lesson you'll learn expressions with negative connotations, part 1.
Alisha: Even if you don't want to use expressions that have a negative connotation, it is important to understand them to be able to read situations correctly.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
Alisha: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Sherif: بيئة (bīʾah)
Sherif: نحس (naḥs)
Sherif: كره العمى (kurh el-ʿamā)
Sherif: كوسة (kūsah)
Alisha: Sherif, what's our first expression?
Sherif: بيئة (bīʾah)
Alisha: literally meaning "environment." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "low class."
Sherif: [SLOW] بيئة [NORMAL] بيئة
Alisha: Listeners, please repeat.
Sherif: بيئة

Alisha: Use this slang expression when you want to describe someone or some place as low class. If you overuse this word, people might think you're a snob.
Alisha : Now let's hear an example sentence.

Alisha: "Don't talk to this guy, he's low class."

Sherif: نحس (naḥs)
Alisha: literally meaning "jinx." When it's used as a slang expression, it means the same.
Sherif: [SLOW] نحس [NORMAL] نحس

Alisha: Use this slang expression when you want to associate a person or an object with bad luck.
Alisha : Now let's hear an example sentence.

Sherif: [NORMAL] .إنت شكلك نحس
Alisha: Okay, what's our next expression?
Sherif: كره العمى (kurh el-ʿamā)
Alisha: literally meaning "hatred of blindness." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "extreme hatred."
Sherif: [SLOW] كره العمى [NORMAL] كره العمى

Alisha: Use this slang expression when you want to express extreme hatred of something or someone.
Alisha : Now let's hear an example sentence.

Alisha: "I hate injections with every fiber of my being."
Sherif: [NORMAL] .أنا بكره الحقن كره العمى

Alisha: literally meaning "zucchini." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "favoritism."

Alisha: "I'm sure it was favoritism. The number of votes is definitely less than that."
