Becky: Must-Know Egyptian Arabic Social Media Phrases Season 1, Lesson 1 - Out at Dinner.
Becky: Hi everyone, I'm Becky.
Amr: And I'm Amr.
Becky: In this lesson, you'll learn how to post and leave comments in Egyptian Arabic about having dinner with friends. Amir eats at a restaurant with his friends, posts an image of it, and leaves this comment:
Amr: باكل في مطعم جديد في المعادي. (bākul fī maṭʿam ǧedīd fī el-maʿādī.)
Becky: Meaning - "Eating out at a new restaurant in Maadi." Listen to a reading of the post and the comments that follow.

POST
Becky: Listen again to Amir's post.
Amr: باكل في مطعم جديد في المعادي. (bākul fī maṭʿam ǧedīd fī el-maʿādī.)
Becky: "Eating out at a new restaurant in Maadi."
Amr: (SLOW) باكل في مطعم جديد في المعادي. (bākul fī maṭʿam ǧedīd fī el-maʿādī.) (Regular) باكل في مطعم جديد في المعادي. (bākul fī maṭʿam ǧedīd fī el-maʿādī.)
Becky: Let's break this down. First is an expression meaning "Eating out at a new restaurant."
Amr: باكل في مطعم جديد (bākul fī maṭʿam ǧedīd)
Becky: Since there isn’t a definitive article at the beginning of the phrase "new restaurant," it’s implied that it’s an indefinite noun. You can add the definitive article for both words to specify a certain restaurant. Listen again - "Eating out at a new restaurant" is...
Amr: (SLOW) باكل في مطعم جديد (bākul fī maṭʿam ǧedīd) (REGULAR) باكل في مطعم جديد (bākul fī maṭʿam ǧedīd)
Becky: Then comes the phrase "in Maadi."
Amr: في المعادي (fī el-maʿādī)
Becky: Maadi is one of the most popular areas amongst young people in Cairo. It has a lot of good restaurants and cafes. Listen again - "In Maadi" is...
Amr: (SLOW) في المعادي (fī el-maʿādī) (REGULAR) في المعادي (fī el-maʿādī)
