Alisha: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Arabic learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Alisha: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question ""Have you been to Cairo?"" In Arabic this is
Carole: هل ذهبت إلى القاهرة؟
Alisha: The first word in the question is
Carole: هل
Alisha: ""meaning did"" in English.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) هل
Alisha: Listen again and repeat.
Carole: هل

Alisha: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Carole: ذهبت
Alisha: meaning you've gone.

Alisha: Now repeat.

★ Note that this is how you ask “Have you been to Cairo?” if you are asking a male person. If you are asking a female person, you would say:

Alisha: ""Yes, I've been twice.. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.

Alisha: To say ""no"", in a simple way, just say:
Carole: لا, لم يسبق لي أن ذهبت إلى القاهرة من قبل
Alisha: Which is like saying no, I haven't been in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Carole: (Slowly) لا, لم يسبق لي أن ذهبت إلى القاهرة من قبل
Alisha: And one more time at normal speed:
Carole: لا, لم يسبق لي أن ذهبت إلى القاهرة من قبل
Alisha: Now let's break down our original response from the beginning. The first word:
Carole: نعم
Alisha: means yes.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) نعم
Alisha: Now repeat
Carole: نعم

Carole: ذهبت
Alisha: meaning I've gone.
Carole: (Slow, by syllable) ذهبت
Alisha: Now repeat.

Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace twice. Say Yes, I've been three times.

Alisha: To expand on the pattern, replace three times with 10 times.
Carole: ١٠ مرات
Alisha: 10 times
Carole: (slow) ١٠ مرات (regular) ١٠ مرات
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with 10 times
Carole: نعم, ذهبت ١٠ مرات
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace three times. Say Yes, I've been 10 times.

Carole: نعم, ذهبت ١٠ مرات
Alisha: To use a different phrase, replace 10 times with 5 times.
Carole: ٥ مرات
Alisha: 5 times
Carole: (slow) ٥ مرات (regular) ٥ مرات
Alisha: Listen to the phrase again, this time with 5 times
Carole: نعم, ذهبت ٥ مرات
Alisha: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace 10 times. Say Yes, I've been 5 times.

QUIZ
Alisha: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Egypt and someone a stranger asks you Have you been to Cairo?. You want to answer Yes, I've been twice.. Respond to the question.
Carole: هل ذهبت إلى القاهرة؟ (five seconds) نعم, ذهبت مرتين
Alisha: Now you want to say Yes, I've been three times.. Respond to the question.
