Top 10 Phrases to Know When Having a Baby |
1. |
ترضّع |
(teraḍḍaʿ) to breastfeed |
Be careful because the word is not |
تردّع |
(teraddaʿ) |
It’s, |
ترضّع |
(teraḍḍaʿ) |
For example, you can say, |
بترضع البيبي كل تلت ساعات. |
(betraḍḍaʿ el-beībī koll talat sāʿāt.) |
“She breastfeeds the baby every three hours.” |
2. |
يلبس بافتة |
(yelabbes bāvettah) to put on a bib |
And in Egyptian Arabic, we usually use the word |
مريلة |
(maryalah) to refer to “bib” |
Or |
بافتة |
(bāvettah) |
whichever you like. |
For example, you can say, |
لازم تلبس بافتة قبل ما تاكل. |
(lāzem telbes bāvettah ʾabl mā tākol.) |
“She has to put on a bib before she eats.” |

يغير هدوم |
(yeġayyar hodūm) to change clothes |
For example, you can say, |
هغيرله هدومه قبل ما نخرج. |
(haġayyarloh hodūmoh ʾabl mā noḫrog.) |
“I will change his clothes before we go out.” |
You can even use it for an adult. |
For example, I can say, |
هدومي اتبلت فهغيرها. |
(hdūmī etballet fahaġayyarhā.) |
“I am going to change my clothes because it’s wet.” |
4. |
يغني أغنية أطفال |
(yeġannī ʾoġneyyeẗ ʾaṭfāl) to sing a lullaby. |
For example, you can say, |
هغنيله أغنية أطفال. |
(haġannīloh ʾoġneyyeẗ ʾaṭfāl.) |
“I will sing him a lullaby.” |
Okay. I only know one sentence. It’s |
يلا ننام يلا ننام، وهدبحلك جوز الحمام. |
(yallā nenām yallā nenām, ūhadbaḥlak ǧūz el-ḥamām.) |
Or in Lebanese, it is |
يلا ننام يلا ننام، وهدبحلك طير الحمام. |
(yallā nenām yallā nenām, ūhadbaḥlak ṭīr el-ḥamām.) |
It means like, let’s go to sleep and if you go to sleep, I will get you like pair of – not get you, but slaughter you a pair of pigeons because it’s very famous like it’s a delicious meal. So I will get you a pair of pigeons to eat if you sleep. |

ينام الضهر |
(yenām el-ḍohr) to have a nap |
الضهر (el-ḍohr) means afternoon and |
ينام (yenām) means sleep. |
So, to sleep in the afternoon is to have a nap. |
For example, you can say, |
البيبيهات عادةً بيناموا الضهر. |
(el-bībīhāt ʿādaẗan beynāmū el-ḍohr.) |
“Babies usually have naps.” |

يأكّل البيبي |
(yeʾakkel el-beībī) to feed the baby |
For example, you can say, |
هأكّل البيبي. |
(haʾakkel el-beībī.) |
“I will feed the baby.” |
7. |
يزق عربية الأطفال |
(yezoʾ ʿarabeyyet el-ʾaṭfāl) to push a stroller |
For example, you can say, |
ممكن تزق عربية الأطفال؟ |
(momken tezoʾ ʿarabeyyet el-ʾaṭfāl?) |
“Would you please push the stroller?” |
عربية (ʿarabeyya) means car and |
الأطفال (el-ʾaṭfāl) means babies or kids. |
So it’s a baby car. |
يزق عربية الأطفال |
yezoʾ ʿarabeyyet el-ʾaṭfāl |
8. |
يجهز ببرونة |
(yegahhez bebrūnah) to prepare a bottle |
For example, you can say, |
هجهز الببرونة و آجي تاني. |
(hagahhez el-bebrūnah we ʾāgī tānī.) |
“I will prepare a bottle and come back.” |
9. |
يحمّي البيبي |
(yeḥammī el-beībī) to bathe the baby |
For example, |
هدخل أحمي البيبي. |
(hadḫol ʾaḥammī el-beībī.) |
“I will go bathe the baby.” |
10. |
يجهزأكل البيبي |
(yegahhez ʾakl el-beībī) to prepare baby food |
And in Egyptian Arabic, we usually use the word |
سريلاك |
(serīlāk) Cerelac to refer to baby food. |
So you can say, |
قبل ما أنزل هجهز أكل البيبي. |
(ʾabl mā ʾanzel hagahhez ʾakl el-beībī.) |
“Before I go out, I will prepare the baby food.” |
Or you can say, |
قبل ما أنزل هجهز السريلاك. |
(ʾabl mā ʾanzel haǧahhez el-serīlāk.) |
“Before I go out, I will prepare the Cerelac or the baby food.” |
